Umbra Earns Gold Medal for the United States in Commercial Remote Sensing Global Rankings

Umbra wins Gold Medal for best SAR DATA Quality in The 2024 Commercial Remote Sensing Global Rankings

WASHINGTON, D.C. – October 02, 2024 – Umbra, a vertically integrated space technology company operating the world’s highest resolution commercial Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites, announced today that a new independent report has ranked Umbra first for SAR data quality globally and second for SAR persistence. These achievements present a unique opportunity for Umbra to further establish the United States as a global leader in remote sensing and to ensure the world’s investments come to the U.S. to advance American innovation.

On October 1, 2024, the Taylor Geospatial Institute (TGI), in collaboration with the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Taylor Geospatial Engine, and the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF), released The 2024 Commercial Remote Sensing Global Rankings, an in-depth evaluation of the world’s leading commercial space-based remote sensing systems.

Inspired by the U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency’s (NGA) 2021 report comparing the performance of commercial satellite imaging systems, The 2024 Commercial Remote Sensing Global Rankings provides an independent assessment of global commercial remote sensing systems. The report takes an “Olympics-style” approach, ranking the top three systems across several performance categories. The 2024 report focuses primarily on advances in U.S. and Chinese remote sensing systems. Of the 11 performance categories, Chinese systems took gold in five, U.S. systems in four, and Finland and South Korea each secured one gold medal.

“Winning a gold medal for SAR data quality, along with a silver medal for SAR persistence, highlights not only the strength of our systems but also the potential for America to reclaim its leadership in the global remote sensing market,” said Todd Master, COO of Umbra. “With the right financial and regulatory support, U.S. companies like Umbra can retain their dominant position on the world stage. I encourage the U.S. Government to ensure that regulatory policies are crafted to keep pace with the speed of global innovation and to drive long-term success in capitalizing on the benefits of commercial remote sensing capabilities.”

Since its founding in 2015, Umbra has established itself as a leader in remote sensing by offering breakthrough SAR imaging technology and patented satellite solutions. With its ability to provide all-weather, day-and-night monitoring, Umbra continues to set new standards in reliability, precision, and intelligence gathering—enabling both government and commercial customers to achieve mission success.
